Joakim – Samurai (Red Axes Remix)

REDAXESNEW.jpg

Following last week’s premiere of ‘Samurai’ via Stereogum, the prolific production duo Red Axes share an intoxicating 7 minute 30 seconds epic remix of the forthcoming album’s title track. A laid-back hum of brass over a gentle percussion; the instrumental is sprinkled with twinkling sound effects, cosmic synths and chopped segments of the original vocal. This is 100% what a remix should be.

A very personal and conceptual body of work, Joakim’s 6th album Samurai is about the artist’s journey between NY, Tokyo and Paris. In writing, Joakim was inspired by a range of influences from the literary (Mishima’s ‘Hagakure: Samurai Ethics & Modern Japan’), to the sonic (home-made electronic and “new age”’ style music) and the circumstantial (Japan and New York).

Joakim – Numb (Apollo Noir Remix)

joakimsamurai-710x550

Joakim shares the first remix of ‘Numb’ taken from his forthcoming album Samurai by fellow French producer, Apollo Noir. A left-field genre blurring remix, it feels completely raw and honest in its interpretation of the original. From the distorted vocals to the mystic synths, in Apollo Noir’s style this remix echoes an alternate reality where music and spirituality become one.

A true artist, Joakim’s visual expression is as strong as his sonics. Evoking the ideas of transformation, ambiguity and artifice versus nature, the Adrian Yu-directed music video for the original of ‘Numb’ appropriates and makes a parody of the YouTube phenomenon of make-up tutorials. Partially shot with a cheap 90s camcorder, the video also nods to the Japanese tradition of Kabuki make-up which inspired the cover art for Samurai.

Video: MAESTRO – Darlin’ Celsa

maestro

MAESTRO‘s Darlin Celsa EP will be out end of May and comes with remixes courtesy of Tigersushi buddy DyE, edit prodigy Pilooski, synth pioneer Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, and legendary Severed Heads. Debut album “Mountains of Madness” is out now on TIGERSUSHI. Video directed by Parachutes.

Hello there, please meet Celsa, the only girl of Mount Madness Academy. He had to have Celsa. But he had to get rid of all who had been there before him. This is a college story about love, frustration, deception and revenge. As for you ultra picky nerds, the video also features quite a few cameos from the French music scene. Can you spot any ?

Maestro – Thriller Killer (Original + Matias Aguayo version)

maestro

Maestro are a French duo signed to Joakim’s label, Tigersushi. This second single from Maestro’s debut LP is probably their most dancefloor friendly yet and still very iconic of their blend of intricate synths, lush production, rough MPC beats and strong melodies.  Starting off with a playful vocal and tropical guitars like you’re sipping on a Pina Colada on a post apocalyptic beach, the song mutates into a massive epic hypnotic chant mid way through the song… oh when that bass comes in.

Who else could render a better remix of that song than Matias Aguayo, who perfectly captures the dark and deep exotica vibe of the track, turning it into a trance infused mantra, in the vein of his recent Legende EP. Video by Vincent Bergerat. Tigersushi release ‘Mountains of Madness’ on March 16th 2015; Pre-order here.
