From the moment she emerged, Tei Shi has established herself as the latest in a line of uncompromising female artists. Her hypnotic brand of deconstructed pop has enchanted fans worldwide, while her bold and innovative fashion sense has drawn plaudits from style publications and Instagram followers alike. After breaking onto the scene with 2013’s Saudade EP, Tei Shi scored a bona fide hit a year later with “Bassically”, which racked up over 12 million streams across streaming platforms and YouTube. Now she’s preparing to release Crawl Space, her astounding and emotional debut album.
Tei Shi is the moniker of Buenos Aires-born Valerie Teicher. Teicher spent her childhood in Argentina and Colombia before moving to Canada, cultivating a strong artistic sensibility from a young age. During her studies at Massachusetts’ Berklee College of Music she began to realize her full potential as a performer, and by the time she moved to New York City after graduation, the Tei Shi project was born.
Mixing indie pop, electronic and R&B influences, Crawl Space is an assertive and masterful debut that sounds like little else out there. On this intimate record, Tei Shi brings a remarkable clarity to the act of being vulnerable, inviting her listener to bear witness to her innermost emotions. At the center is Tei Shi’s unmistakeable voice, a powerful instrument equally suited to pop bangers and sensual ballads.
“Keep Running” is the first single from the album, and is out now. The sumptuous video, directed by Agostina Gálvez, shows off a sultrier side to Tei Shi unseen in her previous visuals.
Director Agostina Gálvez noted, “Val (Tei Shi) and I connected creatively very fast and we were able to integrate our ideas in an interesting way. She wanted to do a karaoke scene and that was the starting point to develop the rest of the story in the video. What I like the most about it is how ordinary elements become strange, generating a special atmosphere throughout the song. Shooting her was great, her slow moves and graceful gestures made her whole performance hypnotic.”
Teicher went on to say, “Keep Running was the first new track I wrote shortly after releasing my last EP. It’s a kind of call to arms to someone you love, to take on and confront all of life’s obstacles together. To fight to stay together through thick and thin. A ride or die kind of love.”
Crawl Space is available worldwide through Downtown/Interscope Records on March 31, 2017. Tour news and more coming soon.
Tei Shi debuts her video for single “Get It” off of her critically acclaimed Verde EP. The video, directed by DREAMTIGER (who also shot her video for “See Me”), was shot in Montreal this past summer where Tei Shi has also been working on her debut album. “Get It” was cut together with footage contributed by NASA, from their Cassini Mission satellite that tracks Saturn and its moons 24/7.
In other exciting Tei Shi news, following a sold out national tour with Years & Years, Tei Shi has remixed their single “Eyes Shut.” You can listen to her take on the track below.

Here’s a new collaboration between Tei Shi and hip hop recording artist Rome Fortune. As FADER notes, “The duo’s collaboration has an edge not apparent in the original, with Fortune’s verses addressing Shi’s pleas for a lover to go slow. When she sings Go slow/ I wanna hear the floor boards squeak/ And I go slow/ I wanna fill the space between, he answers, I said slow slow slow/ What does that mean tho/ I mean, I seem to know but does that apply to me tho. Set against Shi’s seductive tone, Fortune’s bars are abrasive and his delivery aggressive-but that contrast works.”
Tei Shi is about to hit the road on a national tour with buzzworthy Years & Years, also headlining dates in New York and LA along the way. On September 20th, she’ll perform at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn and on October 2nd, she’ll play The Roxy in West Hollywood.

Singer/songwriter Valerie Teicher aka Tei Shi released her highly acclaimed sophomore EP Verde this spring and went on to sell out tour dates both in the US and UK. Now, she offers us a gorgeous video for track “See Me.” The video was premiered by Wall Street Journal Speakeasy yesterday, who note, “Shot mostly in Bogotá, Colombia, where Tei Shi (the stage name of Valerie Teicher) spent much of her childhood, the clip, directed by Brooklyn production duo Dreamtiger and co-directed by Jonathan Wing, mixes scenes of places Tei Shi used to go as a kid with images of cultural sites in the city and its surroundings, including an otherworldly concrete sculpture in the countryside outside Bogotá.”
Of the video, Teicher notes, “This video was shot between the New York winter, and the mountains of Bogota, Colombia. Two environments that I identify with very strongly. It came together kind of spur of the moment, and I had an amazing team with DREAMTIGER and Jonathan Wing helping me fulfill the idea. We spent some days exploring Bogota, the city where I spent most of my childhood and where my mother’s side of the family has lived for generations…along the way we found some breathtaking and really unusual settings, which gave the song a totally new life. I wanted to be able to share this part of my identity through my music somehow, so here it is, in me re-discovering a lot of what defines me and my history through the music that has defined me for the past year. Hope you enjoy it.”
Tei Shi has also announced that in addition to her tour with Years & Years this fall, she will headline dates in New York and LA. On September 20th, she’ll play Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn and on October 2nd, she’ll play The Roxy in West Hollywood.
To mark Tei Shi’s UK & Europe live debut, which kicks off today at The Great Escape, Tei Shi has shared an official remix of ‘Go Slow‘, courtesy of Montreal duo Blue Hawaii. The remix, which premiered today on Crack Magazine (for which Tei Shi is the current issue’s cover star), combines glitchy beats with ambient soundscapes and soft vocal.
Tei Shi’s star has been steadily rising since her hypnotic pop debut EP Saudade and now with the highly anticipated follow up Verde EP, which was released on Double Denim last month.

Tei Shi also teamed up with Body Language who gave her infectious R&B pop classic “Bassically” the remix treatment. The new track was premiered over at Flaunt Magazine who write “Body Language’s remix of Tei Shi’s most recent single, transforms the track from an understated pop lullaby into an understated disco thumper. In a track that’s less FKA Twigs and more PC Music, Shi’s hypnotic vocals and looped melodies are both softer and more urgent, second to the beat and mesmeric bass.”
The new and highly anticipated Verde EP is due out April 14th on Mermaid Ave / Mom + Pop Music and Tei Shi has just signed with Canadian tastemaker powerhouse Arts & Crafts for Canada. Double Denim will release Verde in the UK.

Tei Shi is back with more music in the form of a brand new EP which is being released on Mermaid Avenue, “Verde” is out April 14th 2015 in the US.
The EP features the infectious pop anthem “Bassically,” a track which went straight to #1 on Hype Machine and was described by Gorilla vs Bear as “one of the more badass, body-movin jams we’ve heard this year.”
NYLON today premiered the video for the track, directed by Nicholas Pesce, saying: “If you’re not already familiar, a good introduction to her sound-which deftly explores the borderline of electro-pop and R&B-is her song “Bassically.” The nearly five-minute-long track juxtaposes her signature soft, dreamy vocals with a heavy, percussive synth and a bumping bassline before building to a climax. It’s both seductive, energetic, and insanely catchy.” Tei Shi notes, “I wanted the video to look like what the song sounds like – fun and empowering without taking itself too seriously. So we created a fun fictional comic world with a troop of bad ass girls“.
Off the heels of her last collaboration with Glass Animals, Tei Shi has again lent her vocal prowess to a new Shy Girls track “Arrest Me”. You can check it out below (available for free download, too).
Tei Shi will be playing SXSW in Austin this year, watch this space for the full schedule.
