Love Over Will was the fifth album from Alex Smoke. A suite of perfectly crafted electronica brimming with layers and texture that further explored the melding of his voice with intricate electronics and discordant melody.
The album’s palette of otherworldly strings, distortion, clicks and synths acts as a bed for Menzies’ voice, at times confessional, others loudly declamatory – ‘Love Over Will’ was unquestionably Menzie’s finest work to date.
It now returns as a compilation of remixes and Alex’s own dub versions. On remix duties are Lakker, Tale Of Us, Tessela, CW/A and Alleged Witches – each twisting the source material via their distinct sound palettes. Alex also supplies six instrumental dub versions previously only available from his own website.
Out August 19th on R&S Records.

Tale Of Us remix Alex Smoke’s Dire Need. Out on April 15 via R&S.
Following on from their Record Store Day ‘Looped EP’ release, which featured remixes by Dauwd and Lubomyr Melnyk, Kiasmos – made up of Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen – return with three new tracks and a remix by Tale Of Us.
Recorded in various locations including Reykjavík and Berlin, the EP opens with ‘Drawn’, a four-minute percussion fuelled track with gentle piano motifs. ‘Gaunt’ features the addition of ambient synths and a drum loop, underpinned by slow-moving chords. Title track ‘Swept’ which the duo offered to fans as a surprise gift in form of a free download card at previous show dates, showcases a more club-oriented beat structure alongside Kiasmos’ signature emotive instrumentation.
Closing the EP is a remix from Berlin-based duo Tale of Us who met Kiasmos in London and twist the original downbeat title track into their distinctively dark aesthetic. Pulsating hats and a driving bass loop add pace as the track builds toward an epic breakdown.
The ‘Swept EP’ will be released on 12”/DL via Erased Tapes on November 20th, 2015.
R&S Records are proud to announce a new single from Tale Of Us, double A-side ‘North Star / Silent Space’.The Berlin based duo of Carmine Conte and Matteo Milleri have had one of the most meteoric rises in recent times. In the space of five years, they’ve won plaudits across the board and developed a huge international audience for their singular, emotive techno.
“We are very excited to start this new journey with R&S” Matteo explains. “We really took a lot of inspiration from all these great records from the past, so to finally be releasing with them is a great achievement.”
Known for their extremely high standards that have seen them discard hundreds of tracks in the search for the perfect beat, this exacting precision is highly evident – from the cut glass synth arpeggios, swelling cinematic pad sounds of ’North Star’ to the pulsating groove, dark bass and squalling white noise of ’Silent Space’ (featuring additional production by cohorts Joy O and Boddika) this release is surely some of their finest music to date, and once again cements Tale Of Us’s reputation for delivering dramatic wide-screen club music.
Berlin-based Italian techno duo of Tale Of Us (Matteo Milleri and Carmine Conte) have teamed up once again with Life And Death labelmates Mind Against. “Astral”will drop on October 5th via Life And Death.
“Is the doctrine of the mind fully contained within the physical brain? Or are there places that we can traverse, places between places, that exist outside of ourselves and the consensual reality we all seem to inhabit? Close your eyes and just try it for a second. You may be surprised where you go…
Exploring this theme of journeying beyond our strict sense of self, label mates and friends Tale of Us and Mind Against have joined together once again to create a work that works, fittingly, well past the summation of it’s parts. Playing with tension and release and a restrained but expressive sonic palate that paints a picture without words, these accomplished artists from the Life and Death team bring us to a place that seems to surely exist. Even if we might not be able to pinpoint exactly where that is.”
After Tale Of Us heard “Cherry Red“, they asked for the stems with the idea they would craft a version for their sets – as luck would have it, Recondite happened to pass by the studio at just the right time, and together they ended up finishing a driving and vital interpretation of Barnt’s melodic masterpiece. Around the same time Jens-Uwe Beyer had been quietly reshaping the same track. Prolonging the already massive breakdown towards the end of the track, his remix has been a highlight of Barnt’s DJ sets over the past few months. The final piece of the puzzle came when Crato proposed the possible cover art – a bold remix in itself, reworking the original cover. The elements were in place, it became obvious this release had to see the light of day… So here is Magazine 131. Get it here.
