RA.500: Nicolas Jaar

ra500-x-nicolas-jaar-cvr

Resident Advisor’s Podcast No. 500 by Nicolas Jaar: A strange and lovely bricolage.

RA: On June 14th, 2010, Nicolas Jaar, who was building a reputation as the most exciting new artist on the scene, was behind one of our most adventurous mixes to date. Although not a DJ at the time, Jaar had an uncanny knack for sequencing, moving gracefully through artists diverse as Mobb Deep, Aphex Twin and Marvin Gaye. Jaar released his debut album, Space Is Only Noise, the following year, and went on to take the top spot in our live acts poll three years in a row. On stage and on record, he remains one of the most creatively unhinged artists in electronic music.

Mix was recorded in December 2015, in Brooklyn, New York. Picture is from those new machines at passport control at JFK.

Ask a friend to translate the Khalife track for you. Thanks for including me in this.
Happy New Year. Peace.”

Nicolas-Jaar-look-1

Nicolas Jaar delivers another fine installment of his “Nymphs” series. Below you can stream the nearly nine-minute track “Fight”, which follows this year’s “Nymphs II” and “Nymphs III” 12″s on his own Other People label. The “Fight (Nymphs IV)” is out now digitally via R&S.

Other People’s Imaginary Feast

other people

Nicolas Jaar has celebrated the 100th issue of his Other People label with a collaborative project called Other People’s Imaginary Feast, featuring Holly Herndon, William Basinski, Julia Holter and more.

The drummers are controlling all the samples you hear on the video with the help of a new hardware/software system called Sensory Percussion created by Nico’s longtime collaborator Tlacael Esparza. This new technology enables drummers to easily control an unlimited array of electronic samples, synths and audio effects with any acoustic drum kit. (It made its debut on Kickstarter last week.)

The full piece is up on http://www.other-people.net and it features additional arrangement and processing.

Nicolas Jaar – Pomegranates LP

nicolas jaar

Today, Nicolas Jaar released a 20-track album for free via his Facebook page! The album, titled Pomegranates, is available for free here.

I was still living at my childhood home when I finished “pomegranates”. On March 1st, I arrived in my new home and it was completely empty except for a baby tree. The owner was there to greet me and he asked me if I wanted to keep the baby tree because he had nowhere to put it and no one to give it to. I agreed to keep it and take care of it. Before he left I asked him what kind of tree it was. He told me it’s a pomegranate tree. He had no idea I had just put this out! So there it is, it’s yours now!” – Nico
