Moullinex – Carnival feat. Shermar

Ahead of the release next week of his 3rd album ‘Hypersex’, Portuguese producer Moullinex has shared another new track, ‘Carnival’.

“Months ago this singer from North Carolina got in touch, wanting to work with me. I sent him an instrumental. He had co-written a lot of hits, but ‘Carnival’ would become the very first track he’d actually sing on. I immediately fell in love with Shermar’s voice.” – Moullinex

Bonus #mpfree:

On his third studio album, Luis Clara Gomes extended the creative process to several guest collaborators, from Fritz Helder (Azari & III) to Georgia Anne Muldrow (Flying Lotus, Mos Def), UhAhUh and Tee Flowers, all singers he works with for the first time, to Iwona Skwarek (Rebeka), Best Youth, Marta Ren and Da Chick, long time partners in crime. With each guest he visits each aspect of his infatuation for groove: sunny House music, tropical psychedelia with Brazilian curves, modern soul with a foot in the classics of Motown, jazzy melodies that never take themselves too seriously — all utterly irresistible.

This notion of fruitful promiscuity spanning from the dance floor is materialized in Hypersex’s visual identity. The album artwork was design by Bráulio Amado, one of the most prolific and international Portuguese designers. The vinyl release is accompanied by a fanzine which is as collaborative and diverse as the album, with many guests such as Gonçalo Duarte, Lord Mantraste, Sonja, Germes Gang, Oscar Rana, Sollidha, Simão Simões, Rita matos, Francisco Ferreira e Rudolfo, each one exploring their own relationship with the subject.

The videos that accompany the singles also span from the creative energy bursting from a dance floor, where people meet, ideas combine and new things are born, altering space and social context. From a social experiment disguised as a casting call for “Love Love Love”, directed by Bruno Ferreira, to the street performance of transgender artist Aurora Pinho by João Pedro Vale and Nuno Alexandre Ferreira, the common focus is raising questions on the historical, cultural and political roles of club culture in society.

Moullinex – Elsewhere LP

moullinex

Portuguese DJ, producer and musician Moullinex releases his new album ‘Elsewhere‘ today through !K7 and his own label Discotexas. The album was also previewed as an iOS alarm app, waking users up every day with a new song.

Moullinex aka Luis Clara Gomes aims to be – and succeeds at it – much more than a mere machine designed to make people dance. Not that he’s not good at getting crowds to move their bodies, it’s just that he navigates through various genres and contexts equally well, be it the dance floor, the sofa or the street.

His second full-length album, ‘Elsewhere’ is a perfect example of this fusion. The influences of soul, funk, garage-rock, Brazilian music and psychedelic sounds blend together with bursting synths and futuristic dance music, coexisting in perfect harmony with under Moullinex’s defining stamp.

Having remixed for the likes of Sébastien Tellier, Röyksopp & Robyn, Cut Copy or Two Door Cinema Club, Moullinex has earned himself a solid reputation as a DJ and producer in the dance and disco world and is now set to take centre stage with the release of his second solo album.

Portuguese DJ, producer and musician Moullinex will release his new album ‘Elsewhere‘ on 18th May through !K7 and his own label Discotexas.

Prior to album relelase Moullinex has released the video for ‘Take A Chance’. The concept for the video came from director Silvio Teixeira, who had a dream about an argument between a couple, and the animals and their fire being metaphors for the relationship. The video was intended to be a clash between serious classical Western film language and a more bizarre, neon-lit pop universe.

Moullinex – Love Magnetic EP

press01

Following the huge success of Moullinex remix for Royksopp & Robyn’ “Do It Again”, he’s back with a brand new single “Love Magnetic”, on Gomma. It is the producer’s first new material since the “Flora” album at the end of 2012, whilst his next artist album is also in the making.

Moullinex is a DJ and producer from Portugal, who has been closely related to Gomma for the past four years. He has an innate ability to fuse together myriad musical influences and that lends his productions a rich vein of musicality and originality. He is also the co-owner of the much lauded Discotexas label.

First up, ‘Love Magnetic’ is a summer party anthem that will be enjoyed by everybody who hasn’t fallen or already fell in love with the Moullinex sound. A heavy bassline. A straight beat. Some jazz chords and Luis Clara Gomes’ inimitable sweet and deep singing… what more could you need to make for a huge summer smash? Nothing, that’s what.

The flipside ‘Time and Tide’ is disco going psychedelic. Made up of nicely roughshod percussive rattles and cute little synth blasts to start, it soon gets beefed up by some heavy kicks. Grubby synth lines then come in from down low, as melodies begin to shine up top. After an epic and spine tingling breakdown at the mid point, complete with 80s sounding tinkles on the Casio, things drop once more and surge off into dazzling disco territory.

These are two straight up jams that more than whet the appetite for the forthcoming Moullinex album and will surely win the man many more fans in the process.

Out now on Gomma. Get it here.

Xinobi – Puma Remixes EP [2014]

The Discotexas collective reaches out to a fine selection of remixers to tackle two The Discotexas collective reaches out to a fine selection of remixers to tackle two different tracks by Discotexas co-owner Bruno Cardoso a.k.a. Xinobi from his Puma release. Chosen to rework the material are Mirror People, Malente, Bufi and Moullinex.

Up first, Mirror People who released on labels like Permanent Vacation and Bear Funk as well as Discotexas. His remix of ‘Woods’ is a joyous and colourful one with dancing piano chords, skipping beats and plenty of happy disco dazzle. There’s sufficient jack in the beats to make it a floorfiller without losing any of the musical charm of the rest of the track.

Malente of No Brainer Records then gets dirty on his nice and rough sounding rework of ‘Puma’. He strips it back to a curious melody lead, squelchy percussion and driving bassline that will have dancefloors all marching in happy unison to the locked on drums.

Bufi has also released on this label before now as well as on Kitsune, and his take on ‘Woods’ is a dark, tense thing with a taught bassline, airy vocal stabs and plenty of depth. A stunning breakdown is laced with plenty of tension before the groove lands again and sweeps you off your feet.

Xinobi’s Discotexas partner, Moullinex is a highly acclaimed producer creating many different styles of music and has won fans across the board from NME to Mixmag. His re-work of ‘Puma’ is a stunning, sunny thing that has plenty of wiry synths, funky basslines and organic percussive hooks at its core. Vocal yelps help bring a party starting human element and the whole thing feels warm, humid and inviting.

Each of the four remixers here very much bring their own flavours to the table and breathe plenty of new life into what was already fantastic source material by Xinobi.
