Locked Groove – Sunset Service LP

Following a string of EPs on his own eponymous imprint, Locked Groove presents his debut album – Sunset Service – due March 2019 on Hotflush. Employing strands from multiple influences that inform his diverse musical output, he applies a contemporary lens to fragments of EBM, New Beat, trance, rave and techno.

Since debuting with his first EP on Hotflush back in 2012, Locked Groove has delved into various genres to inform his constantly evolving sound. Drawing on an acute melodic ear developed whilst training as a classical pianist, all of his productions are underscored by an inherent sense of musicality. Using a diverse range of influences, he translates their sentiments into hybrid dance floor constructions that look primarily towards the 90s rave culture of Belgium, with a subtle nod to the UK.

Written over a one year period with combination of analog and digital equipment at his Berlin studio, Sunset Service documents the synthesis of a carefully studied musical background into one coherent body of work. Across twelve tracks, Locked Groove forges cathartic build-ups with intricate pads and floating melodies, re-purposing references – both subtle and overt – from the musical subcultures of his Belgian homeland. But although there is a strong connection to the past, these allusions are carefully moulded into a singular, forward-thinking sound.

Following on from the acclaimed EP series of 2018, the album hosts a few recognisable tracks, like the subaquatic euphoria of ‘From Beyond’ and the syncopated rhythmic swirl of ‘Zillion’. The rest consists entirely of unheard material. The chugging, slowed down percussion of classic Belgian New Beat is fused with ecstatic rave chords and sweltering acid. Elsewhere, angular drum patterns are interwoven with ethereal trance progressions and piercing vocal stabs. Two vocal features come in the form of glistening rave opener ‘Pudding’, a collaboration with New York based creative director Nate Brown and ‘Eden’, a disorienting acid trip featuring the voice of a close friend’s daughter, stella, who, during the 2018 World Cup decided to show her support by sending a Whatsapp voice note saying ‘I’m for Belgium’ – re-contextualised here to add a final nod to Locked Groove’s most inherent musical influences.

Sunset Service is the amalgamation of a diverse and closely studied musical past, incorporating influences that are dear to the artist, whilst retaining a focus on the singularity of his own unique aesthetic.

Artwork for Sunset Service was conceptualised and produced by Belgian graphic designer Paul Boudens.

Absolut Remixes Q1 2016 (inc. BNJMN, Mr Scruff, Locked groove, Akira S, Metrobox and Lay Far)

Absolut Logo_1.jpg

International vodka brand Absolut has begun an exciting remix project that finds them asking underground production talents to add their own spin to great dance music originals. Each remix is then premiered on a special Soundcloud page on the last Friday of each month. So far it has served up remixes by Joakim, Eduardo de La Calle, Fort Romeau, Elysia Crampton and Clap Clap, and now the latest three have all been put together for a brilliant new EP.

Up first is Berlin based Brit and Rush Hour associate BNJMN. Known for his occult take on melodic techno, he tackled Akira S’s ‘Miami Vice’ for January’s remix. The resulting cut is a booming house banger with trippy bells and raining melodies underpinned with thumping techno drums.

Providing the remix due for release late February is Hotflush star and bass techno champion Locked Groove. The Belgium DJ and producer has also worked on labels like Turbo and Life And Death and has made a big impact in just a few short years. His take on Metrobox’s ‘Erotic Psychotic Hypnotic Freak’ is a stripped back and spooky deep house roller with chilly autumnal chords and crisp claps. Dubby pads and slick perc all help sooth your soul and suck you into this most inviting and soft edged sound world.

Lastly, a tea drinking English legend, marathon DJ set specialist and sample happy producer in Mr Scruff steps up. Working with Ninja Tune over the course of many albums, Scruff has a perfectly organic and off kilter sound and here he adds that touch to the ‘Lock And Rock’ track by Russian Lay Far. As such, the remix which is due out in March is a colourful and charming fusion of spraying synths, fat bottomed drums and funky riffs that makes you shake your every limb.

This is a great project that once again serves up some fascinating remixes from a selection of assured modern day stars.

Tracklist:
1) Akira S – Miami Vice (BNJNM remix)
2) Metrobox – Erotic Psychotic Hypnotic Freak (Locked Groove Absolut Remix)
3) Lay Far – Lock and Rock (Mr Scruff Absolut Remix)

Stream: Paul Valentin – Inner Harm EP

Dark Matters, the eclectic imprint founded by Amirali unveiled its third release, Paul Valentin ‘Inner Harm’ out now on vinyl and digital.

‘Inner Harm’ is made up of three original tracks and a remix courtesy of Locked Groove. Inner Harm feat. Search Yiu on vocals is perhaps the most aurally textured on the EP, combining crunching percussion the track builds slowly into a swelling composition. Locked Groove’s remix contains the same swell, looping the vocal and introducing a punching kick drum turning ‘Inner Harm’ into a hypnotic and intense techno cut.

‘Nested Circles’ composition is based around the guitar, Valentin layers sounds, building the track into a sweeping crescendo before settling into an even rhythm.

‘Zugunruhe’ on the other hand, the first track that caught Amirali’s attention, uses piano as its main component. It is the most melancholic on the EP shifting into a broken beat, rich with field recordings and drawn out notes.

Both tracks maintain the use of percussion that enhances the depth of the emotionally charged and complex EP. Maintaining the intelligent output on the label, ‘Inner Harm’ sits perfectly amongst the previous two releases.

Dark Matters, the eclectic imprint founded by Amirali is proud to announce its third release, Paul Valentin ‘Inner Harm’ due for release late January 2016 on vinyl and mid February on digital.

Growing up in a small village in southern Germany, Valentin was influenced by his musical family. Studying classical guitar himself, he combines acoustic, electronic and field recordings in his music creating cinematic compositions. Valentin’s music feels intensely personal, he cites coincidence as playing a major part in his process, happening upon magical moments in his self-recorded audio data which develop into broader features of the tracks.
