Hot on the heels of their celebrated album Beach Goths and after offering-up Paratrooper as part of DJ Tennis’ recent DJ-Kicks, Israeli genre-defying duo Red Axes arrive on Life and Death with an original EP.
Sami is a post-Moondog shamanic tribal trip, while Round combines dilapidated future Goa electronics with just the right amount of cowbell and guitar psych. Vego Gam is lo-fi Spaghetti Western, full of tape delay and amplifier sauce, while Pulse waves and wind chimes ring Russian bells on the title track, Kalacol – a mind-melding dancefloor gem.
A record that could only come from Niv and Dori – another reconfiguration of the Life and Death mausoleum.

The first release by Parisian iconoclast Joakim for his friends and European colleagues at DJ Tennis’ Life And Death records is a miniature nocturne for dance floor meditation, a cascade of unfurling fizzy moods and introspection, finally tuned and expertly rendered by the electronic music maestro.
“I met Manfredi (Tennis) through Luke Jenner (ex The Rapture) in NYC. When Manfredi has a few days off his busy touring schedule, he comes to my studio to work with Luke on their collaboration project. We usually talk about synths, food, DJ gossip and complain about espressos in NYC. About 6 months ago we were eating Korean fried chicken and Manfredi asked me if I’d like to do something for his label Life & Death. At the time I had a bunch of club tunes I started working on and somehow had a feeling some of them could be a fit for Life & Death so I played those and Manfredi very quickly picked one, ‘Daemon’. I thought putting out something on Life & Death was at the same time kind of odd (and if you didn’t notice yet, I like when things are unexpected) and totally appropriate.”
‘Daemon’ is the most “Life & Death style” track on the EP. It’s full of modular synth tweaking and a nod to the 90s Detroit techno epic/melancholic vibes. B-side ‘Would You Give Up’ started as a very slow “R&B meets Techno” groove inspired by the freaky early Micronauts releases. The idea of the tempo change in the middle of the track (it goes from around 85 to 115bpm) came later so that it could be used by more adventurous DJs as a transition tune between different genres and BPMs.
Berlin-based Italian techno duo of Tale Of Us (Matteo Milleri and Carmine Conte) have teamed up once again with Life And Death labelmates Mind Against. “Astral”will drop on October 5th via Life And Death.
“Is the doctrine of the mind fully contained within the physical brain? Or are there places that we can traverse, places between places, that exist outside of ourselves and the consensual reality we all seem to inhabit? Close your eyes and just try it for a second. You may be surprised where you go…
Exploring this theme of journeying beyond our strict sense of self, label mates and friends Tale of Us and Mind Against have joined together once again to create a work that works, fittingly, well past the summation of it’s parts. Playing with tension and release and a restrained but expressive sonic palate that paints a picture without words, these accomplished artists from the Life and Death team bring us to a place that seems to surely exist. Even if we might not be able to pinpoint exactly where that is.”
Swedish producer and composer Alexander Sjoedin aka Sailor & I has shared the official video for “Turn Around”, taken from his new EP of the same name, out now via Life And Death. Get it here. Directed by Anders Abrahamsson and Simon Mulk.
Sweden’s Sailor & I‘s “Turn Around” EP is one that’s been in the works for some time and its accompanying remix is one of the most anticipated tracks of 2014. If you’ve been to see the likes of Dixon, Mano Le Tough, Solomun, Maceo Plex or Tale Of Us recently then you will have heard it, loved it, and wanted it.
The mesmerising Âme remix has been gliding its way round sound systems across the globe since the start of the year and it’s no surprise as to why. The perfect end of set track, it enchants its way through eight minutes of euphoric vocals, grand synths, astounding builds and simply gorgeous drops. You can listen to it for the first time in full below, via mixmag.
Sailor & I’s “Turn Around” will drop on June 30th 2014 via Life And Death. Pre-order your copy here.
