The fourth of Art Department’s ‘Natural Selection’ remix packages is set to drop in August with the arrival of ‘Crazy’. This time, those chosen to add their own unique spin on the huge and still popular original are none other than Jamie Jones and Dennis Ferrer.
As has been well documented, Jonny White is now the sole talent behind Art Department, moving forward with a hectic global DJ schedule as well as offering up a stunning chapter in fabric’s revered mix series. Here he enlists some of his close musical friends for another standout remix package.
First up is Jamie Jones, the king of his own much loved musical empire in the form of Hot Creations. As well as being an award winning DJ and producer, he also performs live with Hot Natured and runs his own key night at DC10 in the form of Paradise. Here the Welshman lays down one of his fat trademark basslines and injects trippy, colourful melodies. Classic sounding, airy hi hats and subtly worked vocal patches add plenty of heat and drama to the groove, and a sci-fi breakdown is sure to send the dance floor wild, especially once Jones’ drums kick once more.
On the flipside US musical heavyweight Dennis Ferrer takes the reigns as he delivers his own take on ‘Crazy’. The New York based DJ, producer and label owner has truly left his mark on the dance music landscape over the last two decades with his Objektivity imprint kick starting the career of the Martinez Brothers and his own records helping to define house music. Here his remix is an expertly stripped back, shuffling house number that goes deep. Synths spiral around, the bass comes on from way down below and Ferrer’s treatment of the vocals adds an air of mystery that is genuinely hypnotising.
This is another essential package from No.19 Music that offers two very different, but equally brilliant, new versions of an Art Department classic.
Emerald City, the newest label venture from Jamie Jones and Lee Foss delivers a majestic second release with a new collaboration between Jamie Jones himself, DJ/composer Kate Simko & London Electronic Orchestra featuring the vocals of Jem Cooke. ‘One Time Game’ is set to be just as successful as the label’s debut release, Serge Devant & Damiano feat. Camille Safiya ‘Fearing Love’.
Kate Simko launched her London Electronic Orchestra project in 2014 and have since sold out concerts at the Britten Theatre, National Gallery, and opened the iTunes Festival 2014. Featuring live instrumentation from harp, violins, cellos, and upright bass, they create intimate atmospherics and indelible frequencies in ‘One Time Game’, a beautiful classic that is paired with a raw 909 club mix. Kate Simko and Jem Cooke first teamed up for their hit song ‘Go On Then’ that topped the charts in house music in 2012, and subsequently released tracks on Get Physical and No. 19. Jamie invited Kate to play at his Boiler Room in Ibiza last summer, where ‘One Time Game’ was first performed alongside a string quartet and harp. The track was finished in London at Jamie’s studio.
“Since moving to London in 2012, I’ve seen Jamie pushing boundaries in an exciting way with Hot Natured and his own solo productions, and he knew I was composing film and orchestral music at the Royal College of Music,’ explains Kate. ‘The timing seemed perfect for us to collaborate, and I was beyond excited he suggested it. Releasing this on Jamie and Lee’s Emerald City is a natural fit, and I couldn’t be more grateful to team up with them, and get Jem Cooke and the LEO on board too.”
o+ Widely regarded as the leader of the new sound of house, Jamie Jones is renowned for his pioneering music; his cross genre band, Hot Natured; his ground-breaking label, Hot Creations; and his world-renowned event series, Paradise. Voted No 1 DJ by Resident Advisor in 2012, his climb to notoriety worldwide continues.
o+o Kate Simko has carved an international career as an electronic music producer, film composer, live performer, and DJ. Getting her start on Ghostly alongside Matthew Dear and Ryan Elliot, Kate has since released on Get Physical, Hello?Repeat, Leftroom, and No. 19, and was named one of Chicago’s Top 10 DJs by XLR8R. This fall Kate has an album upcoming on Sasha’s label Last Night on Earth, and her debut London Electronic Orchestra EP on the Vinyl Factory.
o+o+ Jem Cooke is a singer-songwriter from London, recently signed to Sony ATV through Naughty Songs who has received huge support for her genre-crossing sound from Radio 1, 1Xtra, KissFM, & Capital Xtra.
o+o+o+ The artwork was created by Peter Nudo who was also used for the previous Emerald City release.
Luca C & Brigante make a welcomed first appearance on the unstoppable Hot Creations as they team up once again with the esteemed Róisín Murphy, after their massive ‘Flash Of Light’ collaboration released back in 2012.
Having had a break to work on their solo projects, here the duo conjure up one of their best releases to date. ‘Invisions’ is a wholly refreshing Italo House dream with old school melodic synths riding under Róisín’s seamless vocal. The release also features a ‘Club Version’ adding warm, rounded chimes and an infectious bassline. Hot Creations boss Jamie Jones delivers his ‘Submerged Remix’, deep and dark, destined for the earlier hours of the morning. The highly respected Luke Solomon also makes his first appearance on the label, rounding off the package with his ‘Body Dub’ version, directed straight at the dancefloor with a prominent hypnotic loop, driving hats and a distinctive, abstract melody.
