Video: Fifi Rong – Forbidden Desire

2016_01 Fifi Rong PS WEB-1

London-based artist and producer Fifi Rong returns with her new ‘Forbidden Desire’ EP. Fifi Rong’s nuanced flair and mesmerizing vocals have already garnered online attention from the likes of Clash, the 405 and Fader, and received national airplay from BBC Radio 1 amongst others.  Fifi has performed international headline shows throughout the UK, Europe, and China/Hong Kong; and worked with diverse artists such as Skepta and Tricky – providing the vocals for Skepta’s upcoming album title track.

Fifi’s extravagant talent has attracted renowned contemporaries before, including Lee Slater who’s worked with the likes of Roots Manuva and M.I.A. The title track of ‘Forbidden Desire’ was mixed by Emmy Award nominated New York engineer Robert L. Smith who’s worked with artists from Lady GaGa to the late David Bowie. Fifi Rong’s latest work is a further expression of her genre-bending hybrid-electronica sound, in her own words a “snap shot of my latest development”. The EP represents the continued refinement of Fifi’s distinctive style, described as ‘jaw dropping downtempo electronic music’, and showcases a transitional period towards her forthcoming album.

Fifi produces her music in isolation from start to finish, away from the influences of the outside world – the intention always being to communicate a certain emotional intimacy to her audience and to transport the listener into her very own universe. In her own words “It’s a very individual and intimate language that I speak, with unfiltered and naked feelings of my own, for those who want to join me and listen to something real.”

Fifi Rong’s ‘Forbidden Desire’ EP, is out on April 29. Watch the official video for the title track below:

Fifi Rong has shared an amazing video for ‘Since When‘, directed by fashion photographer and video director Paris Seawell.

Described by Clash as “recalling trip hop chanteuse Martina Topley-Bird, Fifi Rong matches underground styles to a supple, intoxicating vocal style“, the Beijing-born and London-based artist and producer will release her self produced EP ‘Silently Violently’, today 4th December.

Watch the video for ‘Since When’ here:

Fifi said about the video, “this song is amongst the least abstract, conceptual ones I have written. Although It’s my own story, I’m sure every other person out there’s been in a similar place either emotionally or physically. The best way to get the emotional purity across in the video was to stay raw and simple – just sing.”

Known for her collaborations with artists such as Tricky, Madeaux and Phaeleh. Fifi is an artist and producer in her own rights, and she most recently worked in the studio with Skepta among others.

Beijing-born and London-based artist and producer Fifi Rong returns with another dose of her sometimes dark and sultry, sometimes light and beautiful, always unique and eccentric brand of deliciously addictive songwriting in the form of her new EP, ‘Violently Silently’, set to drop on 4th December.

Fifi uses the title, ‘Violently Silently’, to describe her genre-bending sound, which she explains is “subtly vulnerable and introverted, yet extremely emotionally powerful and brutal”.

The release is Fifi’s most deliberate expression yet of her trademark hybrid sound, taking the listener on a journey into her remarkable soundworld. The EP forms a cohesive body of work, showcasing her artistic prowess and the depth of thought which goes into her composition, with each song relating to the others. In her own words, “the same set of sound elements were sampled, crafted and re-sampled to demonstrate a set of songs that people would conventionally consider to cross several genres”. The first track, ‘Intro’, is a premix of the second, ‘Once’, which includes a sampled preview of both ‘Slow Poison’ and ‘Since When’ (tracks 3 and 4). The EP is then rounded off by ‘Outro’, which itself is a remix of the penultimate track.

Over the last couple of years, Fifi has flourished as a songwriter and a producer, collaborating with Phaeleh, Skepta, Tricky and Boris Blank/Yello, as well as film maker Paris Seawell, culminating in writing, recording, and producing the ‘Violently Silently’ EP herself, before being mixed by Lee Slater, who has previously worked with the likes of Roots Manuva, Roll Deep and M.I.A.

Having already established herself internationally as a stand-out live performer, with headline shows throughout the UK, Europe, and China/Hong Kong, Fifi has been going from strength to strength, picking up radio support from BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 1 Xtra and BBC 6Music. The EP represents the continued refinement of Fifi’s distinctive style, which has been praised by the likes of Fortitude,Clash, Fader and The 405, and was described by Through The Wire as ‘jaw dropping downtempo electronic music’.

Her live prowess will be showcased with a special EP launch at The Garage in Highbury on 24th November, promising an electric evening that will aptly display the pure emotional intimacy, mesmerizing vocals and nuanced flair of her Chinese heritage that fans have come to expect. ‘Violently Silently’ is a release which both delivers and challenges, going one step further in refining Fifi’s distinctive sonic vision and creative palette, and transporting listeners into her very own universe.
