The Mountain Has Fallen EP featuring Nas, Danny Brown, and Steven Price, available now. Director: Dan Emmerson.
DJ Shadow has released a surprise EP called ‘The Mountain Has Fallen’ via Mass Appeal Records. The EP features collaborations with Nas, Danny Brown, Academy Award-winning composer Steven Price and a brand new solo composition and is available now.
DJ Shadow and Nas unveil their first-ever collaboration with “Systematic”, which will also feature on the Season 4 premiere of HBO’s Silicon Valley April 23. The song finds Shadow and Nas joining forces over a deeply funky, boom-bap beat. Shadow’s deft touch of old-school turntablism and scratching sets the scene for a fiery, scathing performance from Nas. “Systematic” is the first track to be released from Mass Appeal Records’ forthcoming ‘Silicon Valley: The Soundtrack’ out on June 16.
The 12-track album finds DJ Shadow exploring new realms in addition to the deep samples and kinetic soundscapes that helped to launch his career 20 years ago. On ‘The Mountain Will Fall’ he’s shifted further toward original composition, a vast experimentation of beats and textures, synthesizers and live instruments including horns and woodwinds. The album features Run The Jewels, Nils Frahm, Matthew Halsall, Ernie Fresh and more.
Here’s Ben Gomori’s Utopian Edit of DJ Shadow’s Midnight In A Perfect World. Premiered on his guest mix on John Digweed’s Transitions show this week and being given away as a free download via Data Transmission.
“Unofficial edit. I made this last month after having had the bones of it sitting there for about 15 months, finished it and then found out that by chance Shadow’s 20th anniversary re-issue of ‘Entroducing’ just happens to be out this month, so felt like good timing to finally get it out there. Hope you like it.“

From DJ Shadow on the ENDTROSPECTIVE:
“As a music lover, my favorite records always have some hallmarks of an era, but also sound as if they could have been made almost any time within a 20 year time span. I’ve always felt that as someone who buys a lot of records and sits there and studies them and kind of vibes off them, I also feel like once you put something out into the world, it can be discovered later. That happened so much with Endtroducing – 10 or 15 years down the road, people were discovering it.”
DJ Shadow has unveiled the music video for the song “Nobody Speak” featuring Run The Jewels, a standout track from his latest album ‘The Mountain Will Fall,’ out now on Mass Appeal Records. The video depicts a meeting of leaders that quickly descends into chaos, a scene not unlike what is unfolding in governments around the globe. It also features appearances by DJ Shadow and Run The Jewels.
Says DJ Shadow: “We wanted to make a positive, life-affirming video that captures politicians at their election-year best. We got this instead.”
Says Run The Jewels’ Killer Mike: “It’s such a dope video. It’s what I really wish Trump and Hillary would just do and get it over with…And even in that fight I think Hillary would win – and that’s not an endorsement.”
The video was directed by Sam Pilling and produced by Pulse Films, stars Igor Tsyshkevych and Ian Bailey, and was shot in NYC, London and Ukraine.
DJ Shadow has unveiled a new single, “Bergschrund,” from his forthcoming album ‘The Mountain Will Fall’ (Mass Appeal Records / June 24). The song is a pulsating, icy collaboration with Berlin-based musician, composer and producer Nils Frahm.
A North American tour in support of the new album has been announced for September and October including two nights each in LA (Sept 28+29/Teregram Ballroom) and NY (Oct 14+15, Music Hall of Williamsburg). See below for full tour dates. Tickets go on sale this Friday, June 10.
Says DJ Shadow on the “Bergschrund” collaboration: “Nils Frahm is an insanely smart composer. He created a sinewy, gated vintage synth line which I then expanded upon, hopefully to complimentary effect. Our track is called ‘Bergschrund,’ an obscure German word for a particular type of crevasse, or ice cliff, usually found on mountains at very high elevations.”
DJ Shadow will host three Beats 1 shows this year, the first of which will air June 23. The show will be called DJ Shadow Presents: #radioface. His BBC Essential Mix will debut on July 2 and he created a radio station for Pandora, the Producer’s Who Inspire Him Everyday: pdora.co/25IhBgI
‘The Mountain Will Fall’ is DJ Shadow’s first full-length release since 2011 and finds the groundbreaking artist shifting further toward original composition, experimentation, and live instrumentation.
DJ Shadow has unveiled the first music video from his new album, ‘The Mountain Will Fall’ (out June 24 on Mass Appeal Records). The otherworldly, gorgeous video for the title track features an astronaut floating across a mysterious planet and hurtling through a distant universe synched to the song’s “rolling, meditative” (Vice Noisey) rhythm. The video was created and directed by Territory Studios, who has worked on some of the biggest films of the past few years (The Martian, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron), plus video games like Forza, Need For Speed, Killzone and more.
Says director Marti Romances: “As huge fans, it’s been a pleasure to collaborate with DJ Shadow on the graphics. We’re really excited by the project and look forward to an amazing come back. The peaceful and long momentum of the song inspired us to create something very unanimated and mysterious. The part we like the most is where we see the astronaut being shot into hyperspace and then we see that being part of that cosmic constellation at the end.”
