Synkro – Hand In Hand EP

Following the release of Synkro AKA Joe McBride collection of his formative early works earlier this year, Apollo Recordings is proud to present a brand new EP that draws on the rich heritage of library music.

Despite having come up during the dubstep era McBride’s music has always resisted easy classification – ‘Hand In Hand’ sees him shift his musical focus in a yet more cinematic direction.

McBride explains : “The record was inspired and influenced by my love of electronic 80’s UK library records like the Chappell AV series, Bruton, Soundstage & De Wolfe Music library. Theres a lot of synth work that carries on from my album using my trusted Juno-6 / SH101 / JX8P combo with the addition of drum samples via an old akai S2800 I purchased recently. Most sounds I’ve made from scratch on hardware based on sounds used in the library records i mentioned above along with a few cheeky samples.”

Synkro’s signature expansive atmospherics are still very much present, but now they have been burnished by soaring synth pads and pulsing drum tracks that call to mind the haunted melancholy of John Carpenter or contemporary such as Legowelt or Andy Stott.   Rhythmically ‘Hand In Hand’ sees McBride moving somewhat away from his usual off kilter programming inspired by 2-step and garage, embracing the steady pulse of 4:4 which turns out to be an effortless fit.

Sieren – Ascension EP

A software engineer at Ableton by day, Sieren’s love for UK influenced bass music and field recording and experimental soundscaping resulted in his Apollo debut ‘Static Polymorphism’ a masterly EP of spaced out street-rave soul.

Now returning with the five track Ascension EP, Frick has tightened and toughened up his sound somewhat (see the caustic bass glower of ‘Slinger’), augmenting his starry eyed wonder with a firmer percussive underpinning and more driving tempos. However still present are his preternatural grasp of emotion and atmosphere that marked him out as one to watch – perfectly underscored by the heartbreaking beauty of the title track.

Fellow Apollo cohort Synkro AKA Joe McBride was instrumental in the curation of Sieren’s debut Static Polymorphism EP on Apollo, hand picking the tracks, as well as road testing them in his DJ sets. This time McBride goes one further, collaborating with Frick on the track ‘Lost You’ to memorable effect – the beautiful pads and ghostly piano are a perfect synergy of their complimentary skill sets.

This is richly textured and intricately programmed post-bass music that is sure to satisfy fans of Burial, dBridge, Akkord with its soulful sincerity and warmth.

Mr. YT – Brand New Day LP

mr yt.jpg

Apollo / R&S are proud to present a compilation album of a series of classic EPs of timeless vibes and lush percussive excursions from overlooked Japanese innovator Mr. YT AKA Yuji Takenouchi.

The ‘Brand New Day’, ‘Southern Paradise’ and ‘Parfum’ Eps were originally release between 1997 – 1998 on Apollo Records and R&S sub-labels Generations and Global Cuts.

Over the intervening years, the EPs’ heady blend of atmospheric pressure, balmy pads and deep grooves has percolated, gathering fans across the globe, to the point where original copies are in high demand on the secondhand market.

Created in the late 90s on a hardware set up of Roland Super Jupiter, Roland JV1080, Roland D550, Yamaha TX81Z and Akai S1100, Takenouchi was burning with inspiration from the sounds of Ron Trent and Chez Damier, Basic Channel, House of 909, Ian Pooley and Carl Craig.

A video game musician by profession, Takenouchi was used to producing music for specific scenes / sequences – starting from scratch had him baffled. Deciding to set a theme or concept for each EP proved to be the breakthrough he needed, a day of new environment for ‘Brand New Day’, yin and yang for ‘Southern Paradise’ and imaginary fragrances for ‘Parfum’. Looking at pictures related to each of these themes helped to fuel his creativity while producing.

From the sun dappled balearic haze of opener ‘Morning’ to the blissed out bump of ‘Afternoon’, the gauzy euphoria of ‘Ocean In Heaven’ to the cosmic funk pulse of ‘Regard’, the music contained in the ‘Brand New Day’ compilation remains as timely and relevant as the day it was released and should see Mr. YT appreciated alongside the likes of the US and European producers who first inspired him.

Out on 10th March 2017

1. Morning
2. Reve
3. Souvenir

Video: Synkro – Midnight Sun

synkro

Check out the beautiful new video for Synkro’s ‘Midnight Sun’, one of the tracks from his debut album ‘Changes’, due to drop on Apollo on 18th September.

The video is a trippy monochromatic journey of morphing geometric shapes, set to the downtempo broken-beat of ‘Midnight Sun’.

For his debut album Synkro once again proves his effortless ability to create cinematic textures and surreal sonic vistas. The addition of vintage synths to his studio has helped to shape the sound of the tracks, whilst his trademark warm, emotive melodies are ever present.

Gacha feat. Natalie Beridze (Tba) – Bliss

Gacha is ready to drop his debut nine-track album, Send Two Sunsets via Apollo.

The album is a collection of tunes built over the years rather than an album with a concept that you try understand over time… The tracks are all from the last three years, and I feel they capture everything that happened around me during this period of my life. Some of the tracks were recorded when I was just starting to make music and some are new songs with a more improvisational process behind their creation.” Gacha

Below you can stream the appropriately titled LP cut “Bliss,” featuring the vocals of Natalie Beridze.

‘Send Two Sunsets’ is out on May 5th 2015. Pre-order from iTunes and get an instant download of ‘Bliss’ – hyperurl.co/sendtwosunsets. Pre-order the transparent blue LP from Apollo – bit.ly/1Ad5oPX.
